Health and Wellbeing

As part of our Health and Wellbeing activities we decided we would try and see the world from a different point of view. We had to try create a model out of play dough, but we all had to do give up doing something - someone couldn't talk, another could only use one hand, someone had to close their eyes and someone else had to stay on their chair and they couldn't move out of the chair. It was a lot more challenging for everyone than they expected. The person who was had their eyes closed had to cooperate by telling people what they had to do because they couldn't do much and the person who couldn't move from their chair was very helpful because they can use their arms and talk because they just had to stay on their chair, the person that couldn't talk had to either write stuff down or try give signals with their hands and the person that could only use one hand was helpful but it would've been hard. We tried this activities to learn and understand more about disabilities.

Creative session with Britt

On Thursday p7 had a visit from Britt Harcus. We were learning about what people in the past wrote like. We got to have a shot to write using feather quills, charcoal and bamboo. 

We also got to look at some of her grandad's belongings from World War 2,  like ID cards and some photos. Britt had brought in an old fashioned typewriter that she got from her mum.  When you used it you had to press the buttons really hard.

Class Seven contributing to school life

This year, Primary Seven are taking on individual roles within the school to develop their skills and attitudes in a wide range of areas.  

We have started our work by creating information boards around the school.  Here we will share who is in the group and what we hope to achieve in our roles.

Class Seven working on with the Town Heritage Initiative

We are working on a project with the Town Heritage Initiative and Britt Harcus.  This piece of work will go on until Term Four and will culminate in the creation of a storybook.  

We have decided to focus on World War 2 in Kirkwall and began our research at the Wireless Museum.  The curator shared her knowledge about technology during that time and how it effected the people working and living in Orkney.

We have also been to the archives department at Kirkwall Library.  Here we discovered more information about the War and individuals in the town.  We made use of all the different materials the staff had looked out for us including maps, pictures, books and artefacts.

Badminton Taster Session

This week we had a badminton tester session. We did badminton challenges like running around the hall trying to keep the shuttle on the racket, sometimes we walked, sometimes we ran, sometimes we skipped, sometimes we sprinted. We also tried to see how many times we could hit the shuttle.

A busy few weeks

This term we have been doing lots of different activities. The first activity we did was buddy the P1s to show them round the school. This included helping them with getting their lunch and taking them to the playground. The next thing we did was meeting a mathematician and an author. After that we went to get some rubbings around Kirkwall to send off for a project we are doing. Finally we did a active schools netball session and learnt some netball skills at it.
